Job Description for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Operator

Geographic information systems (GIS) operators are employed primarily by government organizations and utility companies, and are generally responsible for creating and/or maintaining maps of geographically-referenced data. They conduct research in the lab, and through documentation, to obtain maps and other database information with which to work, and also analyze and utilize data from photographs and maps using GIS.

GIS operators generally work with different clients, customers, and business owners to determine what kind of information should be represented in maps. They often work with other members of staff, such as junior associates, and may also lead and direct these associates depending on the company's hierarchy. They themselves may report to a department lead or director, and work almost exclusively in an office setting with little to no necessary travel.

Most companies prefer applicants who have at least a high school diploma, and some prefer those who have a bachelor's degrees in geography and/or at least one year of experience in a related field, while many also accept applicants with no prior experience. All geographic information systems operators must have a good understanding of GIS mapping tools, such as ArcGIS, as well as Microsoft Office programs, to excel in this position.
