Groundsmen work in a variety of locations, and some work independently for individuals or contracting companies to maintain garden and lawn areas. Some groundsman also work with larger tools and machinery that can be quite dangerous and require extensive knowledge and experience. They must be able to work carefully with their hands to provide high-quality care and ensure that outdoor areas look presentable, and some work for golf courses and other businesses that require regular outdoor care and groundwork.
Groundsmen may work independently, but also in large groups depending on the size of the job, and a high school diploma and prior work experience in an outdoor setting are often minimum requirements for this position while some employers require an associate's degree or certifications. Hours for groundsmen can vary greatly and include morning or nighttime work.
