HVAC sales engineers promote and sell heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment (HVAC) of industrial size to commercial accounts. Much of this work involves finding good matches of equipment output and efficiency to match buildings and interior work areas. These engineers are responsible for ensuring that they provides optimum climate control/ventilation equipment for the particular setting without creating wasteful cost overruns for the purchaser or contractor, while also ensuring that the system recommendations meet the needs of the building.
HVAC sales engineers typically work with construction managers or managing contractors, either on new construction of a commercial space or a remodel or renovation. The contractor will provide a rough overview of the design specifications for the workspace and expected climate needs, and then seek a competitive bid from the sales engineer to provide equipment and installation. The HVAC sales engineer will then use a variety of intricate calculations regarding air flow and aerodynamics to find the best match.
When working through these calculations, the HVAC sales engineer will consider not only the main machinery, air conditioners, heat pumps, or exhaust equipment, but also the placement of duct work, blowers, vents, and items like compressor capacity and condenser requirements to achieve the climate environment specified by the owner of the workspace or the construction manager and designers. These engineers also consider installation costs by labor and submit the best competitive bids on the work. Typically, HVAC engineers do not work on commission for this highly specialized and technical sales career; rather, their success at securing contracted work is usually reflected in bonuses.
To work as an HVAC sales engineer, candidates should have a strong educational background in an area such as mechanical or industrial engineering and practical experience in commercial HVAC work. Most HVAC sales engineers split time between office work, field work, and even out-of-office travel on occasion.
