Head football coaches spend much of their workday outside and standing for several hours at a time, and candidates should have at least two years of suitable experience, such as at the assistant coaching level. They are responsible for conducting meetings with student athletes and staff, as well as answering any questions from parents of student athletes, and hours for this position may last until evening and include several days with irregular working hours, including nights and weekends.
Head football coaches generally work with between one and three assistant coaches whom the head coach will guide and direct. An associate's degree with an emphasis on physical activity may be a minimum requirement for this position, and applicants should also produce between three and five personal or business references. Applicants should also be knowledgeable of standard university rules and regulations, NCAA standards, and all football strategies and terminology.
