Health and safety consultants are employed primarily in retail work-spaces, construction zones, educational departments, government buildings, and many other locations where health and safety play key roles in keeping the environment positive and thriving. These consultants are primarily responsible for inspecting work environments to ensure that they comply with all city, state, and federal health and safety regulations, as well as designing and implementing programs that meet environmental guidelines and ensuring that employee safety is promoted throughout all daily activities.
Health/safety consultants perform periodic inspections, including ensuring that warning signs are properly placed throughout the premises, checking personal protective equipment, and inspecting electrical equipment and ensuring it is locked out so employees cannot activate these devices when repairs are in progress. They also provide training to employers and their employees to address a variety of safety and health concerns, as well as develop and distribute health/safety manuals which detail the company's responsibility to maintain workplace safety on a daily basis.
To become a health and safety consultant, applicants must take a training course in a relevant field or pass qualification exams associated with health and safety regulations. Some employers may require applicants to pass higher-level qualification exams which are approved by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health in order to work full-time.
Health & Safety Consultant Tasks
Assess conditions and risks to determine root causes and suggest physical, behavioral or other changes.
Schedule and conduct investigations and interviews to determine current state of health and safety.
Write policies and procedures to improve health and safety, training employees on any changes.
Assess, document, and make recommendations about health and safety for particular workplaces.
Coordinate with laboratories, legal counsel, Department of Health, and other groups.
