Job Description for Health Information Management System (HIMS) Director

The integrity of a patient's medical information is of paramount importance to both the patient and health care provider; the patient will not want sensitive information about themselves in the hands of unscrupulous individuals who may steal their identities or sell such information, and the health care provider has a reputation to maintain. To ensure the security of sensitive data, health care facilities operate a complex health information management system which is overseen and managed by a health information management system director.


Health Information Management System (HIMS) Director Tasks

  • Monitor, assess and ensure effective use the use of department resources.
  • Develop and maintain computerized record management system processes.
  • Develop and implement organizational policies and procedures for patient data services.
  • Oversee staff operations, business planning and budget development.
  • Plan and direct the health information management service areas, ensuring compliance with professional, state and federal regulatory requirements.
