Health physics technicians evaluate areas to determine if radioactivity is present. This may be done to determine if areas are safe to carry out jobs. The technician will carry out surveys in order to determine the radioactivity of a certain place. The technician will also inspect tools that may create radioactivity.
Hospitals may use health physics technicians in order to reduce the radioactivity inflicted on patients. After the technician has received results, the results will be analyzed. Then a plan for radioactivity protection and procedures to minimize risk should be devised. A goal of a health physics technician is to minimize risk on people’s health. In some jobs, the health physics technician will develop a plan to decontaminate an area that has been exposed to radiation. The technician should make sure that all results and procedures line up with company policy and the law of the land. The technician may also help to establish or modify company policies whenever necessary.
Computer skills are necessary in order to be able to create reports from the data collected. Usually, a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in environmental health, physical sciences, engineering, or something related is needed. This job requires strong problem-solving skills in order to come up with solutions for decontamination or minimizing the risk of contamination. The duties involved may subject the technician to extreme weather or temperature conditions. Exposure to radiation is also a risk that comes with this position. Some positions will require experience in addition to educational requirements.
Health Physics Technician Tasks
Determine intensities and types of radiation in work areas, equipment, and materials, using radiation detectors and other instruments.
Decontaminate objects by cleaning with soap or solvents or by abrading with wire brushes, buffing wheels, or sandblasting machines.
Collect samples of air, water, gases, and solids in order to determine radioactivity levels of contamination.
Set up equipment that automatically detects area radiation deviations, and test detection equipment in order to ensure its accuracy.
