Those in this position are responsible for the administration of the entire home health apparatus and typically answer to a general manager or director of operations. The home healthcare director also coordinates employee functions such as hiring and scheduling, monitors employee performance, and ensures that all rules and regulations are followed. He/she generally takes a hands-on approach with patients and meets with them and their families to arrange services, provide assistance, and answer questions.
These directors must be well-organized, project strong leadership, and coordinate groups of people (often from a distance) in performing various tasks. Prospective applicants should have a thorough working understanding of billing, budgeting, and insurance, as well as the technical aspects of the care provided.
Home healthcare directors should generally have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Administration, Healthcare, Social Work, or a related field. Most employers prefer candidates with at least two to five years of supervisory experience within the healthcare field and/or a solid background in healthcare administration.
