The hospital education coordinator should have strong computer and research skills. It is important to keep up with new developments within the field. Public speaking skills are often needed, as the coordinator may be expected to present some of the education personally. The coordinator should perform periodic audits, in order to note gaps in education that should be reviewed. This includes reviewing patient care, outcomes, and satisfaction. In some positions, the coordinator may be required to come up with standard methods of care. Risk assessments will also be carried out by the hospital education coordinator, in order to identify risk areas that may be detrimental for the financial status and image of the institution. For these reasons, it is important to be familiar with all of the workings of a medical institution.
Often, the coordinator will be expected to be a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree and years of clinical or hospital experience. Current state certification is usually needed. A master’s degree in education or a related field is also frequently required for this position. This is usually a full-time job that is carried out in an office environment, with frequent visits to various departments within the medical facility.
