Job Description for ICD-9 Coder

An ID-9 coder, or medical coder, uses computerized coding systems to enter patient data. The ID-9 coder works in a medical facility, or may instead be a sub-contractor who works from a remote location. This position includes entering patient diagnoses, treatments, and procedures through a coding method, and the coder may have to search through documents and charts to obtain these codes. From there, medical entities can properly bill patients and their insurance carriers.

ICD-9 Coder Tasks

  • Compile, abstract and maintain patient medical records to document condition and treatment.
  • Review records for completeness, accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Release information to persons and agencies according to regulations.
  • Protect the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained.
  • Identify, compile and code patient data, using ICD-9-CM and CPT and other standard classification coding systems.
