Inside sales directors must ensure that the sales representatives in their departments meet all sale quotas, which is usually determined by sales executives who pass on the expectations to the inside sales director. They may also participate in the hiring and training of new inside sales department employees, perform performance appraisals, and work to develop career goals for sales representatives. As managers, they must also settle disputes between sales reps in a potentially high-pressure environment.
Inside sales directors are also responsible for ensuring that the representatives they supervise have a consistent stream of sales leads to pursue, and must relay leads to the sales reps on a regular basis. To do so, they communicate closely with marketing and other departments to consistently find potential customers for the products and services they sell, which involves attending regular meetings and utilizing strong verbal and written communication skills. While inside sales directors usually work varying hours in an office, they also attend outside conferences in order to increase their industry knowledge.
Although a bachelor’s degree in marketing or sales is highly beneficial for this position, some employers require only an associate's degree or no college education at all.
