The amount of clerical work for insurance claims assistants to complete can certainly be intimidating. Some duties include invoicing and processing insurance claims, maintaining the customer database, drafting insurance proposals, organizing in-going and out-going mail, processing and organizing data files, and much more. It is highly recommended that insurance claims assistants type at least 30 to 40 words per minute in order to process all of the information they receive each day.
Being able to communicate effectively with customers is vital for insurance claims assistants. They must be able to handle phone calls during high-volume hours and make sure everyone's questions and concerns are answered. Many customers will call due to negative circumstances, such as health issues, accidents, or the death of a loved one, so these assistants must be able to gather information while keeping the customer calm. A professional and understanding attitude is a must in these situations.
Those in this position must also be able to handle calls from customers who want to know more about various policies offered by the company. In these cases, they must be knowledgeable of everything the company offers in order to assist the customer.
To be qualified for this position, applicants should have a high school diploma and at least one year of experience in a clerical setting. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications like Word and Excel is necessary for keeping records, and these assistants must also be able to use common office tools like printers, fax machines, and photocopiers.
