The kitchen hand's duties generally include the cleaning and maintenance of silverware, dishes, and cooking supplies such as pots, pans, and utensils. The kitchen hand is expected to maintain their kitchen's quality standards in terms of safety and cleanliness of supplies and tools at all times. The kitchen hand may also be expected at times to retrieve used utensils and dishes from tables at the front of the house and safely transport them to the kitchen for cleaning. A kitchen hand may also, at times, assist with the station and kitchen preparation as required by the other cooks and chefs within the kitchen. Ensuring the laundering of kitchen linens may be a responsibility of the kitchen hand.
Strong hand-eye coordination and attention to detail are required for this position. The ability to work in busy or hectic environments that may be of varying temperatures, including very warm, is often necessary. The kitchen hand must be punctual, dependable, willing to learn, and take criticism well on the job. They must be able to work well under pressure as part of a team, while performing tasks quickly and well. Generally, there are no formal requirements in terms of education for this position.
