A kitchen supervisor works in the food service industry, in places such as restaurants and cafeterias. The aim of a kitchen supervisor is to make sure all duties are carried out in a safe manner and the end results satisfy customers.
It is absolutely essential to be familiar with food preparation and serving guidelines, along with health and fire codes, to make sure the kitchen staff is complying to these rules. This supervisor should be able to motivate employees while making sure they adhere to all rules and guidelines. When duties are not carried out correctly, he/she should be able to provide constructive criticism to make sure the behavior is changed. When conflicts arise among staff, the supervisor should act as a mediator to resolve them.
Basic computer skills are often necessary, as many positions require the kitchen supervisor to create reports on kitchen activity. Public speaking skills are important, as those in this position will often have to provide training to new employees. They should also keep up with the latest food trends to plan menus, as well as plan schedules and delegate tasks to staff members.
Purchasing is another part of this job, and the kitchen supervisor should make sure stock levels are kept consistent. There may be a budget that must be followed, so he/she should try to obtain affordable but high-quality ingredients and supplies.
A kitchen supervisor may also have payroll duties and must ensure that both billing and wages are distributed accurately. In some positions, he/she will also be expected to cook, so knowledge and experience in this area is important. Some positions will require a minimum of a high school diploma, though many require a higher degree.
