Landscapers often develop designs and concepts for the green areas of a facility and listen closely to their clients' needs regarding the vegetation and design to be implemented. Some common duties of the position include mowing grass, weeding, aerating, planting flowers, trimming hedges and trees, raking leaves, and generally keeping areas clean and tidy. Some landscapers may be required to have prior experience with sprinklers and hand/power tools such as hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and electric saws. In other positions, the use of heavy machinery, such as excavators, is required. In any case, it is important to have a good eye for aesthetics to succeed and encourage clients to return.
Some landscapers work directly for companies or individuals in need of landscaping services, while others work as contractors. The job often requires traveling from facility to facility to complete jobs, so a clean driving record and valid driver’s license are generally required. There are also entry-level and assistant positions available. Physical strength is also required, as there is a lot of bending, lifting, standing, and walking involved.
