It is important to be able to combine colors in an attractive manner and to be able to have just the right balance of space, text, and pictures. The layout should make the information easy to comprehend yet attractive to look at. Some layout artists will be responsible not only for the layout of things, but will also be tasked with coming up with the actual artwork to be used.
An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in graphic design is usually necessary. A layout artist will often collaborate with team members to produce a work of art. However, much of the work is done independently, so it is important to be able to adhere to time constraints and to work at a steady pace. The work is often done in an office environment, though the layout artist may work from home on a freelance basis. When working in the animation field, a degree in film or animation may be needed.
