Library assistant directors typically chair the committee which appropriates funds each year for the acquisition of new assets and selects the categories of expenditures, including electronic devices, books, subscriptions, and other categories. Once the committee has allocated funds by category, the library assistant director ultimately decides which items in each category shall be purchased and which branches will house those acquisitions.
These assistant directors must compile and utilize data to determine which library services are used most by patrons and recommend the growth rates of those services to the committee of appropriations. They may also have hiring responsibilities and must comply with all federal and state laws in hiring practices.
Library assistant directors are expected to spend at least 4 hours in each branch every month to observe the atmosphere and tone of the operations and establish visibility to the employees who work for each branch. They typically work at a main library during regular weekly business hours, and there are ten holidays observed by all county employees.
