Job Description for Licensed Acupuncturist

A licensed acupuncturist is required to pass the national certification exam in acupuncture. Licensed acupuncturists have accumulated an average of 2,700 hours of master's-level training, hundreds of hours of clinical experience, and at least 250 actual patient treatments before actual licensure. Training can be comprised of home study and videotaped lectures. An acupuncturist will need to complete a course in clean-needle technique that teaches the prevention of the spread of disease. Coursework also includes anatomy, biophysics, and nutrition, as well as courses specific to Oriental medicine, including herbalism and needle technique. All must pass a written exam.

  • Assess clients' soft tissue condition, nerves and blood vessels to determine appropriate acupressure sites.
  • Place small needles into predetermined sites on a patient's skin to relieve pain or stress.
