Positions as a line service technician for cable, phone, and telecommunications are commonly available in companies providing services ranging from traditional telephone lines to high-end fiber optics data networks. Generally a high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum requirement for this position, though higher-level positions may have additional requirements.
Technicians work in the field to install and maintain service lines on a regular basis. Installation may include working on lines in new areas or connecting customers to existing lines, both which require relevant training and knowledge. Most companies provide this training for new employees, so previous experience is not generally required. In addition to installations, working on existing installations to troubleshoot and repair service problems may also be necessary
To effectively perform these duties, a driver’s license is usually required to drive from work site to work site. In addition, the ability to use tools ranging such as ladders and pliers - as well as lift up to 80 pounds - is necessary with most openings. Other physical activities performed by line service technicians include long periods of squatting, crawling, standing, and (in some cases) climbing tall ladders. Work is often done in small teams and jobs may require partners, but some independence for certain types of jobs is also expected. The work environment varies greatly from job to job, ranging from client houses to construction sites, with work shifts also varying; however, these professionals generally work during regular business hours.
