A machinery maintenance mechanic is responsible for ensuring that equipment continues to operate at acceptable levels. First and foremost, a machinery maintenance mechanic is responsible for performing regular maintenance and inspections of equipment; this may involve visual inspections, as well as tasks such as operating a robot to perform a diagnostic test. Aside from general inspection and maintenance, this mechanic responds to requests when a machine breaks down or otherwise malfunctions.
To troubleshoot issues, the machinery maintenance mechanic begins by performing necessary inspection. After identifying the problem or broken part, they consult any needed sources to determine the best way to fix the problem or replace the part. Often, these sources include manuals or electronic databases that contain information on the particular piece of equipment. The mechanic then follows the repair or replacement process outlined, which may include tasks such as removing a broken part, repairing it with tools, and replacing the broken piece.
Machinery maintenance mechanics generally need a high school diploma or equivalent, although a higher-level degree may be required. These mechanics must be capable of reading blueprints, know how to use tools (including welding equipment), and be capable of working effectively alone and in groups.
