Job Description for Mammography Technologist
Mammography technologists are responsible for performing mammography exams, using a sophisticated X-ray of the breast for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as breast cancer. The technologist's daily duties consist of operating the X-ray equipment and performing a variety of mammography-related diagnostic procedures. Mammography technologists work with doctors, other medical staff, and patients on a daily basis, and they must be able to effectively communicate information about procedures to the patients. Other daily duties include maintaining patient records, providing instructions to patients, and cleaning equipment when it is not in operation. A mammography technologist typically reports to a chief technologist or manager, and they may work either full or part time depending on their employer's needs.
The requirements for this position usually include formal radiologic technology training from an American Medical Association-approved school, as well as current status as a registered technologist and several years of relevant experience. Mammography technicians also need excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient-care skills, and they must be willing to participate in continuing education opportunities as required by their employers.
Mammography Technologist Tasks
- Review and evaluate developed mammograms or other digital breast images for clarity.
- Use radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff.
- Monitor video display of area being scanned and adjust density or contrast to improve picture quality.
- Explain procedures and observe patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan.
- Operate mammography unit to produce images of the breasts for diagnostic purposes.
