Job Description for Managed Care Specialist

Managed care specialists generally work in the healthcare industry to verify insurance coverage; they may work directly with patients. These professionals refer patients to specialists, keep track of referral status, and obtain authorization on behalf of patients from managed care organizations. Other tasks performed by managed care specialists include working with patients' physicians to clarify specialist referrals, as well as performing a liaison function among the insurance company, customer operations staff, patient billing staff and other relevant professionals. These specialists address patients’ concerns regarding health insurance coverage, explain benefits to patients and may be involved in sales efforts.
