A factory manager supervises operations in a manufacturing or industrial facility. They are typically responsible for hiring and performance decisions, as well as staffing, training and ensuring that operational procedures and processes are followed. Factory managers study performance and productivity data reports for various areas of the factory, looking at ways to improve performance and productivity; among other elements, this involves ensuring that repairs and maintenance are performed appropriately. Additionally, this manager carefully monitors their factory's input and output levels.
The factory is generally an integral part of a supply chain, and the manager must make sure that needed materials or components are in steady supply; this helps ensure there are no logistics-related slowdowns in production. In addition, the manager works to ensure that the factory does not overproduce, especially in plants that work with perishable goods and consumables. In most situations the factory manager works with a production manager or director to help set production parameters for the manager to meet. The manager also typically has group leaders or factory foremen who report to him or her, and he or she works with these direct reports to set staffing, set schedules, and forecast hiring and staffing needs.
Most factory managers have a mix of both practical experience in an industrial setting and an educational background in industrial engineering or business management. These individuals typically spend time in both an office environment and on the factory floor. While some factory managers work during regular business hours, many factories stay in production around the clock; in these cases, shift work during evenings and overnight may be required.
