Job Description for Mask Designer - Semiconductor
Mask designers for semiconductors work within a subset of electronic drafters; the term "mask" refers to a particular template which controls the formation of microchip layers during production. These designers are responsible for creating templates or stencils for microchip processors and other electronic components, and they typically work with incredibly tiny components requiring the use of computer-aided drafting tools (CAD) and other drafting methods. They typically work in a clean room wearing protective clothing which prevents microscopic particles from causing problems with microchip development, and they may also consult with clients and coworkers to determine the needs and program requirements of any particular circuit board.Read More...
A certificate or associate’s degree in electronic drafting or mask design is generally required for this position, and course work should include circuit design and analysis, microelectronics, drafting techniques, and CAD software programs. A strong background in engineering, computer science, or mathematics is highly beneficial, as they regularly read traditional blueprints and recreate them in computer-aided drafting programs. Semiconductor mask designers typically work during regular weekly business hours, and may also be required to work overtime when a project nears its deadline.
