Job Description for Medical Director, Oncology

Medical directors of oncology are board-certified physicians who provide guidance and leadership to a team of physicians and other medical professionals specializing in the field of oncology. These directors are responsible for creating treatment protocols and overseeing the medical team's adherence to those protocols, and they must also establish medical controls, define scopes of practice, establish guidelines, manage risks for the team, and monitor the overall operations of their facility. They may also be tasked with hiring staff, designing compensation and incentive programs, providing performance evaluation and coaching, and disciplining physicians and other medical staff. Some may also work with health plan administrators to coordinate treatment plans, benefits, and payment of services.


Medical Director, Oncology Tasks

  • Develop and implement behavioral health and recovery services and systems.
  • Develop, evaluate, approve and revise clinical policy and protocols.
  • Provide patient care and follow up services, including assessing patient care plans.
  • Manage and oversee daily clinical and administrative operations.
  • Attend and present at meetings with other departments and area groups and agencies.
