Mental Health Case Manager Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Mental Health Case Manager in Baltimore:
"More direction in dregress."
Take care of your self.

Mental Health Case Manager in Yuba City:
"Strong time management."
You need to have the ability to be able to work independently for a majority of the week while still able to jump in and work with a team on many different projects.

Mental Health Case Manager in Atlanta:
"Research every possible area of the company."
If you are going into this field I would recommend a Master's in Psychology, Counseling (LSW, LPC, MSW) as I have discovered I am required to complete more documentation than the therapists or doctor's I work with at this time. Do complete research of the company, talk to someone who works in the position your want. Working in mental health requires ongoing education to keep up with advancements in counseling methods, medications, program reimbursements, knowledge of APS rules and regulations (check their last three APS audits - if below 89, I would not recommend the company) In this field, depending on the company you will discover either the company wants a traditional employee (do the job, don't ask questions or suggest new ideas) or an employer who wants up to date knowledge/creativity. Be wary of managers who have held the position 5 years or longer as they usually have not kept up with policies, laws, or pursued CE's, which can be detrimental to you - you know more than them.
