Those in this position are often responsible for carrying out research of the competition’s pricing to keep the advantage in their companies' favor. When managing a retailer's website, they must gather pictures to display products and research product information to create the best promotions; they may work with product distributors and manufacturers to gather this data. Above all, arranging websites for easy navigation and spotlighting particular products is of the utmost importance.
Merchandise coordinators must also ensure that out-of-stock products are removed and all information about product pricing is accurate. When working inside stores, they must ensure that products are placed in an aesthetic and strategic manner throughout the store, and may also be in charge of providing training to other staff members.
In some positions, merchandise coordinators may also have duties involving merchandise delivery, storage, and distribution. Prior experience with retail merchandising is often essential, though some internship positions are available. Generally, some college education is required, and a bachelor’s degree is preferred by most employers.
