A meter reader monitors usage of gas, electricity, and water meters in order to charge consumers the correct amount of money. When meters appear to be damaged or broken, the meter reader must report this to management. If it appears that facilities are being used in an unapproved manner, the meter reader must also take action and tell this to management. Hazards that are encountered while reading meters should also be noted so that they can be fixed immediately.
The meter reader should perform meter readers in a courteous and professional manner, adhering to company policies. In some areas, meter readers will read meters remotely. In others, the job involves visiting different houses and facilities in order to acquire readings. This involves being minimally intrusive and asking consumers in a polite manner whenever to need help to access a meter that is difficult to reach. Usually this job involves traveling and driving a company vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver’s license is needed, along with a good driving record. Since this job often requires working outdoors, the meter reader may be subjected to unpleasant weather conditions.
A minimum of a high school diploma is usually needed. Good computer, report-making, verbal, and writing skills are usually necessary. Minimum physical requirements may be need to be proven, as a decent amount of walking is often expected. Time constraints are often involved in this job, so the ability to work independently with very little supervision is necessary.
