National sales representatives are responsible for selling product or services on behalf of their company on a national scale. They are in charge of increasing sales figures by finding new customers and demonstrating product and/or service value. National sales representatives must be able to explain technical characteristics of products to a general audience, as well as use a personal computer to keep accurate records of sales and interactions with existing and prospective clients. They generally report their progress to the national sales supervisor within their organization.
They develop and execute effective sales and marketing plans based on sales requirements. Based on region research, national sales representatives develop and implement sales strategies as well. One of their main responsibilities include traveling to ensure they meet or exceed territory sales objectives. They strive to establish and maintain strong business relationships with prospective and existing partners. as well as provide product or service training to customers in support of new business offerings.
A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required for this position. In addition, previous experience in a sales capacity may be required or preferred. Industry and sales certifications may be beneficial. National sales representatives must have excellent interpersonal skills and be proficient with basic computer programs such as the Microsoft Office suite. They must work well in a team environment with other sales representatives to reach all company objectives in a timely manner; however, they also need to perform well by themselves with minimal supervision.
