Manage your time as a part-time flex employee
After I had my daughter, I decided to go back to work on a part time basis. Although working 2 twelve hour shifts would meet my health care benefits, I was afraid that my salary would not be adequate enough to maintain my family. However it was a matter of either paying high babysitting cost or working part time to balance my hours with my husband. In my job, there is alway the possibility of working an extra shift if one chooses to. At the end of the year, I ended up making more than a full time salary without feeling committed to a three day flex schedule. Also I did not have to work an extra fourth shift per month which is required for most flex jobs. Whenever I could afford to work I always worked an extra shift, making my salary closer to a full time position. At times I could even work one day a week by either taking a Holiday or a vacation day. Like this I never had to use sick time which made my employer quite happy. For anyone in school or any new mom/dad this is to consider if you have a need to closely manage your time and at the same time enjoy all the benefits of your job.
