A private duty nurse is a person who cares for a patient inside the comfort of their own home. This is a position which will work primarily indoors. While minimal travel may be required within the position itself, this is all depending on the patient and their needs. A private duty nurse will typically hold a regular work schedule, though extended hours and overnight shifts will be required of many private duty nurses. While this type of nurse can work amongst a team of other nurses, this person will typically work independently. A private duty nurse will have a variety of responsibilities and duties, depending on their patient’s needs. Overall, this person will be responsible for assisting their patients with daily needs. Some typical duties will include performing personal hygiene tasks, assisting with movements, preparing meals, feeding, preventing falls, monitoring various vital signs, performing dressing changes, managing medications, managing various medical equipment, managing various disorders, managing patient safety and care, performing palliative care, caring for genetic disorders, and maintaining job flexibility. This position requires a person who has high emotional intelligence, is able to build strong relationships with each patient, and is willing to assist with patients' improvements and developments. This person is one who should be compassionate and truly optimistic in nature.
