Nursing Director Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Nursing Director in Las Cruces:
"Better Communication and Collaboration among Leadership."
I wish I knew what is considered when company hires into leadership roles. This company does not have a career ladder where advance in education is not compensated. It is stressful in the way that leadership mentions that we have autonomy to run clinic in a productive way, but leadership still dictates how we should staff without considering personal factors which affect retention of nursing staff. I am a hard worker, am compassionate about nursing and about the nursing staff I supervise. I try to better the staff by including them and encourage them to run clinic in an effective and easy for everyone. I encourage teamwork as it is how things get done well. Exceling in this job would be to have Administration/Leadership allow for advancement by taking in ideas and allowing us to implement them at the forefront. As a Nursing Director, I am expected to work the floor, supervise the patient flow, and at the same time, meet Administration's expectations on doing administrative work.

Nursing Director in Providence:
"Work ethic."
Be honest. Check your ego at the door. Be willing to work with a team recognizing we all have unique skills.

Nursing Director in Ketchikan:
"Politics."
Watch out for institutional politics.

Nursing Director in Las Cruces:
This job entails being a leader not a manager. You are more than a director you do data entry work, payroll, education and much more. The stress level is high because you are middle management. You must keep your team happy as well as your supervisor.
