When the patient prefers glasses, it is important to help customers choose frames based on the client’s needs and desires. Then these frames will be fitted precisely to the customer’s face. It is also important to keep up to date with eyewear trends and to have aesthetic skills when the customer needs help in choosing a style. Sometimes, it may be necessary to make repairs. Strong customer service and communication skills are necessary so that the client feels at ease. It is also important to have a strong knowledge of what the company offers, in order to offer the customer the ideal products. The optician should be able to explain the benefits of certain products. Commission is sometimes offered based on the sales made. Usually, inventory duties are necessary so that items are always in stock. The optician will also often be required to work with insurance companies in order to collect payments. Other administrative duties are usually included in this job, such as cashiering, scheduling appointments, data entry, and answering the phone.
Some job offerings require the optician to be licensed and experienced in the field, while other jobs are open for entry-level applicants. Both part-time and full-time positions are usually available.
