Job Description for Optician Apprentice
An optician apprentice is a licensed optician who is just starting out in the trade. The apprentice will work under the supervision of an experienced licensed optician, an optometrist, and/or an ophthalmologist. An optician will read prescriptions and fill them. Eye exams are not performed by an optician, as they are performed by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. However, it is important to be able to interpret the results of eye exams. Frames of glasses should be fitted to the patient’s face, and lenses should be installed that fit the prescription. Sometimes, it is necessary to repair damaged frames and lenses. The optician may be in charge of communicating with the insurance company to obtain authorization. The optician usually works in a shop or an eye care practice. The work area must be kept neat and well-organized to be appealing to customers. Often, inventory is another part of this job.
In order to become a licensed optician, it is usually essential to attend a program of study that takes up to two years and to pass a certification exam.

- Prepare work order for optical laboratory containing instructions for grinding and mounting lenses in frames.
