The optometry technician usually assists an optometrist or an ophthalmologist in carrying out duties relating to dispensing eye care products for customers. It is important to be able to work well on a team. The technician may carry out pre-tests, record patient history, and perform data entry of patient records. Inventorying of the contact lenses and frames may be required.
Since data entry is carried out, proficient ten-key and typing skills will be useful. Other job duties may be helping a patient to select frames and giving the patient advice as to how to use contact lenses. Since this job requires working with clients, it is important to have strong customer service skills. The job may take place in a retail shop or a clinic. The technician will have to carry out basic housekeeping duties and should make sure that the environment is organized in an appealing manner. It may be necessary to help maintain the machines.
Usually, part-time and full-time positions can be obtained. Some jobs require that the technician have worked in a similar position, while others offer training. The ability to stand and walk for the majority of the shift is a necessary physical requirement. The hours of the job vary, though they are usually carried out during daytime and evening hours. It may also be required to carry out job duties during weekends.
