A hand packer will typically keep consistent hours. However, this is generally defined as shift work. The hours will be commensurate with the manufacturing facility’s hours, which could include overnight and weekend hours. A hand packer will generally not require a college education, but a high school diploma or the equivalent is generally recommended.
A hand packer will work among a team of other line worker under the supervision of a director. The exact demands of the position will depend on the facility and materials packing, but the duties generally include assembling cartons and containers, lining and padding cartons and containers, examining and inspecting materials, examining and inspecting containers, ensuring that package specifications are met, marking and labeling containers, marking and labeling products, moving and sorting various materials using hand tools, pacing products into proper containers, removing completed products or materials, removing defective products or materials, placing products on moving equipment conveyers, sealing containers using glues or hand tools, cleaning materials, measuring and counting products, and assisting with recording all specified data. This position requires a person who is capable of focusing on the job at hand and has an eye for detail.
