The patient access supervisor generally has an assigned group of staff members that they oversee, and they may be in charge of providing discipline and instruction; they may also play a role in hiring staff. The supervisor makes sure that the staff members adhere to all organizational standards, are productive, and produce high-quality work. Patient flow must be monitored to make sure that the wait time is not excessive. Budget management may also be part of the patient access supervisor's responsibilities. The patient access supervisor also acts as a sort of link between the patient administration department and the various departments in a hospital.
Some patient access supervisor positions require a postsecondary degree, though some positions require only a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience in the patient access field and knowledge of medical coding is necessary, as the supervisor should know how hospitals and other healthcare facilities operate. Managerial experience may also be needed. Proficiency with basic computer programs is important in this position, as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills.
