Job Description for Pharmacy Technician, Lead
The lead pharmacy technician generally works under a pharmacist, assisting them in the pharmacy by completing tasks such as mixing medicines and creating IV solutions. The lead pharmacy technician holds a leadership position in which they must provide guidance and instructions to other pharmacy technicians. These professionals are also in charge of cleaning the pharmacy, performing bookkeeping duties such as creating bills and medicine labels, and using a computer to complete work-related tasks. There may also be logistical duties involving keeping inventory and restocking. Whenever discrepancies are noted, the pharmacy technician must notify the pharmacist immediately. In addition to a high school diploma or equivalent, current pharmacy technician certification is generally required for this position. Prior to receiving certification, relevant schooling is needed. For example, technicians can complete a pharmacy technician training program, which generally takes up to two years; an associate’s degree in pharmacy technology may be preferred over a training program. Some positions may require experience in the field as well. Additionally, good communication skills are required in this position since the lead technician works with customers, pharmacists, and other technicians on a day-to-day basis.
