Infectious disease physicians/doctors are responsible for treating patients with infectious diseases on behalf of their organization. They are in charge of providing excellent patient care, as well as providing solutions to infectious illnesses and helping stop them from spreading to other individuals. They must be able to effectively explain disease-related information and treatment options to patient and their families. Infectious disease doctors recognize, evaluate, and make recommendations to control and/or prevent the transmission of infections. Infectious disease doctors use a personal computer to keep track of patient information, treatment progress, and other pertinent information. Among their main duties are providing infection control training and acting as an infection control resource for their employer. Infectious disease doctors may also develop reagents, assays, and methodologies to identify viral variants and/or improve on existing approaches by participating in research programs. They are the liaison between other departments and the infection prevention and control department in their organization.
A medical degree is needed in this position, as well as three years of training in internal medicine and two to three years of training in infectious diseases.
Previous experience is generally required or preferred as well. Infectious disease doctors must have a deep knowledge of infectious diseases, work well in a team setting with other doctors to serve patients, and work efficiently on their own with minimal supervision.
