Naturopathic physicians/doctors work primarily in naturopathic clinics and private practices, while some work in regular hospitals. Candidates for this position should be educated in naturopathic medicine and have a four-year bachelor’s degree along with standard medical education and training.
Prior experience in teaching and/or clinical research is beneficial for this position. Naturopathic physicians/doctors may be required to treat patients using modern scientific medicine, but typically emphasize treatments using natural alternative methods. They are required to treat their patients' diseases using conventional medicine while also stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities using alternative medicine. They must take their patients’ emotional and mental condition into close consideration in addition to their physical health, and they should also uphold the philosophy of treating the whole person rather than individual symptoms.
Strong interpersonal skills and excellent bedside manner are important in this position, and they must be willing to listen to patients to understand their needs. To keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date, naturopathic physicians/ doctors may read professional journals and attend relevant conferences, and flexibility is highly beneficial to be be on-call at any time.
