Job Description for Plant Breeder
Plant breeders work with a wide range of plants and crop systems in order to identify, care for, and develop a variety of plants and crops. They also conduct experiments in which they discover and explore new plant life, as well as various breeding combinations. Their research focuses on finding and developing new and effective ways to produce a vast amount of crops with as few resources as possible. A bachelor's degree in biology, botany, or a related field is generally required for this position. Plant breeders may work either in the private sector or for the government in order to conduct research. In addition to a bachelor's degree, many in this position also obtain certification in plant breeding to develop expertise in specific areas and bolster career opportunities; however, such certifications are not required for employment. Also, many schools have begun offering doctorate programs in which plant breeders can obtain doctorate degrees in plant breeding, as well as plant genetics.
