Job Description for Police Dispatcher

A police dispatcher is the first person contacted when emergency assistance is requested. Dispatchers generally work within call centers or actual police stations; while they work in shifts, the position itself is 24-7, so some may be required to work weekends or overnight shifts. They may work either alone or on teams with other dispatchers depending on the size of their department. Educational requirements are not strict, aside from a high school diploma or equivalent; initial training is available on-the-job and ongoing training is often required. Aspiring dispatchers should also be familiar with a variety of technological equipment.

Police Dispatcher Reviews

What is it like working as a Police Dispatcher?

Police Dispatcher in New Iberia:
"The good, the bad & the UGLIEST."
Pros: Hands down, the most rewarding factor of my job is knowing that my ultimate goal is making the world a better place. Our main focus is to institutionalize criminals who endanger law abiding citizens for reasons only they are able to advise. We work very, very hard to make life altering decisions for people in the community without personally knowing most of them. We are the people who are there to help those who feel they have no one else to turn to. I truly value human life, and I feel obligated to take whatever measures needed to protect the safety of human life, animals & property.
Cons: Law enforcement is portrayed as a corrupt, biased field whose ultimate goal is to harm & kill innocent people which makes me sick to my stomach. We are unappreciated by millions of people. We are cursed at, spit on & lied about on an everyday basis. It's unsettling to know that you are supporting & helping people who don't support & help you. As a dispatcher, the lifeline between a critc situation & help, we are constantly overlooked and are treated as if we are the bottom of the barrel. We are victims of harassment far more than most because our perpetrators are able to hide behind communication devices. No matter how good of a job I do, only my faults are noticed, spoken about, and exaggerated. No matter what kind of mood I am in or what is going on in my life, I am to be a calm, happy and professional person helping those who, if we are being truthful, aren't calling for positive reasons. When I answer the phone I am always hearing about the bad in the world.

What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Police Dispatcher in Paris:
"Integrity in Action."
Give yourself time to learn the basics then build upon that knowledge. Attend all available training. Be professional. Never be timid about bettering yourself.
