Because swimming pools are inherently dangerous, pool attendants receive both first-aid and lifeguard training before beginning work, and are expected to be strong swimmers and able to interact well with the public. They should also have the willingness to learn new tasks, a helpful demeanor, and an outgoing nature for success.
Prior work experience is not usually necessary, as this position is often considered entry-level, but demonstrated customer service skills are beneficial. Many pool attendants work while attending high school, so a diploma is not generally required. Hours can vary depending upon the employer and location, as climate plays an important role in the hours a pool is open to the public, and city/county ordinances are also a factor. This position is usually seasonal and part-time, as many pool attendants are also high school students.
