Power system operators are responsible for configuring and operating power systems that require specialty training. They are in charge of monitoring and moving different equipment in a plant setting, and they must follow all safety procedures to prevent on-the-job accidents. One of the operator's main functions include operating power systems according to established guidelines for operation. They are also responsible for dealing with power systems maintenance, repair, and escalating operational issues as needed. In addition, power system operators are in charge of restoring power systems after electricity failure, performing high-voltage operations, and directing protective device procedures.
Power system operators need to be familiar with federal power regulations, as well as basic computer software to measure and communicate power outages as required. They must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and be able to multitask on a variety of projects at a time. These individuals need to excellent problem solving skills to find innovative solutions during emergency situations and have strong interpersonal skills to interact with vendors and utilities representatives to maintain the stability of the power grid.
A relevant degree from a vocational or technical school is generally needed for this position, and relevant experience is typically required or preferred. Industry certifications may be beneficial. Power system operators must be organized and follow established reliability standards. They must work well on their own, as well as in a team setting, and be able to complete assignments within deadline.
