Practice managers are responsible for the daily operations of a private medical office or public medical clinic, from staffing and scheduling to handling patients' complaints. They serve as human resources for the office and also participate in training new staff members, as well as ensure that all legal obligations are met within the office.
These managers must supervise office staff, including the front office (receptionists, medical billers, and coders) and back office (nurses and medical assistants). They oversees all medical operations, as well, including maintaining medical records, handling cash, deposits and billing, and ordering medical equipment and supplies.
Those in this position must have excellent customer service and people skills, as the position requires daily interaction with both patients and staff. Problem-solving skills are also important in order to address all complaints and issues within the office. As managers, they must always be organized and ensure the steady flow of work on a daily basis.
Practice managers generally have a bachelor's degree in nursing or healthcare management/administration or an advanced medical degree, as well as years of experience in an office or other medical setting. They work primarily in indoor, climate-controlled office settings during regular business hours, and some offices may be open for weekends or holidays. Overtime may occasionally be required, and minimal travel to meetings and conferences may also be necessary.
