Prepress supervisors are responsible for ensuring that everything is in order prior to documents being printed, and they are often present for the printing process, as well.
Generally, these supervisors receive files from customers and will direct the arrangement of their concepts so the files can be printed in an attractive manner. They will work with clients to ensure that their needs are understood, so customer service skills are important. This job also requires a high degree of creativity and may require supervisors to come up with modifications to color schemes, fonts, and arrangements of documents, among other things. Then, a proof will be made, which must be shown to the customer prior to being printed. If the press is not created digitally, a plate will need to be made which will serve as the template for the prints. Strong communication skills are important in order to understand clients' needs and work well with other employees, such as designers, production supervisors, and customer service agents. These supervisors often oversee a variety of employees, so leadership skills are highly beneficial.
Prepress supervisors are responsible for delegating work and monitoring progress on a daily basis. Work quality should be scrutinized and any inefficiencies should be pointed out, and reports and work logs should also be written on a regular basis. It is important to keep inventory to ensure that supplies are available at all times, and proficiency with graphic design software is often required for the position, as well. Familiarity with printing press machines is also important, as maintenance and troubleshooting may occasionally be necessary.
