President and CEO Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

President and CEO in New York:
`"$Our industry constantly evolves which keeps it interesting."`
Authenticity Rings True. Follow your heart, focus on what you are passionate about, don't pretend what you are not and draw on your authentic strength. "Authentic" is not a theme or about reinventing yourself - it's about knowing who you are and sticking to it.

President and CEO in Dallas:
`"$Setting strategic goals help create your path to success."`
Everyday formulate an action item list and prioritize this list in order to achieve your optimum goal. Understand that your optimum goal is to ultimately produce revenues. Have a deep understanding of your staffs skill sets and train them to hire accordingly. Your most powerful tool is your team building skills your goal is to instill a mind set that "this is my company and I really care". You are only as successful as your worst employee.

President and CEO in Tucson:
`"$Discernment."`
I would have wanted to improve my discernment across all lines of communication as verbal communication is most important in forming relationships.

President and CEO in El Segundo:
Watch your money because nobody else will and it will disappear. Don't be afraid to hold every employee accountable for expected results.

President and CEO in Chicago:
`"$Objective Understanding is Critical to Success."`
Regardless of your undergraduate major, make certain you obtain some expertise in the financial aspects of your organization. Even though you may have a perfectly altruistic mission, the "real world" will eventually force your attention to the realities of meeting a payroll and paying the rent. Anticipating these needs is critical to your organization's long range impact.

President and CEO in Buffalo:
`"$Self Employed."`
Running your own business is the last truly merit based pay. Plus you won't hate your boss.

President and CEO in Las Vegas:
`"$Be Careful Of What You Wish For."`
When I was young and dreaming of creating my own empire, fortune and doing it my way, I never dreamed that having ultimate freedom could be so vastly confusing. It was so simple to meander the path of employment. I could wander from one job to the next as I would quickly tired of one job and moved on to another, sometimes working as many as 2 or 3 jobs at one time just to keep things interesting. I found most jobs to be far too single faceted to keep my interest. Taking on the head of a company single-handedly was by far the biggest underestimation of my life. My thoughts were now it will be easier, no more politics and chaos in the workplace. Just clear focus on the jobs at hand and delivering the highest quality product and customer service possible. Overnight I found I was suddenly no longer doing one job I knew really well but now doing a dozen jobs I had no idea what I was doing. My first advice is this: Find a great A/A stat otherwise you will never have time for the details.
