Prison wardens are employed in any and all prison facilities; while the position is primarily mental in nature, it may also be physical on occasion. The work environment can be dangerous, as some prison inmates can be unruly. Formal education requirements may vary depending on the state; however, a degree in criminal justice is highly beneficial and prior work experience within a corrections facility is almost always required.
Prison wardens are primarily responsible for managing all activities among correctional staff in their institutions. Common responsibilities include: ensuring the safety, security, and proper treatment of all staff and inmates; establishing and implementing prison policies; monitoring and improving prison activities; making decisions regarding staff (hiring, training, evaluating, promoting, firing, etc); delegating appropriate responsibilities; making all final financial decisions; ensuring compliance with governmental and legal regulations; and maintaining the overall fairness and safety of the prison at all times.
