What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?
Product Marketing Director in San Jose:
"Organization, Communication And Experience -- For The Win."
- Get good with a spreadsheet. If you can organize your ideas in a way that directly impact cost or revenue your opinion will have much more credibility.
- Learn to write well. If you can communicate clearly and succinctly people will look to you for vision. If people trust you to write, then you can become the voice of the organization. There is power in that.
- Develop your empathy. Knowing what it feels like to be your audience makes you an effective marketer. Learn to put yourself to the side, and then feel how others will interpret your message based on their perspective.
- Get real-world experience before you leave university. I only hire people with experience, so if you want to start earning a decent paycheck once you graduate do whatever you can to get relevant experience in the real-world as early as possible (internships, co-op programs, joint research with industry, etc.)
