Job Description for Product Marketing Director

Generally, a product marketing director works on crafting the messaging and positioning for their company's products.They are required to develop innovative marketing strategies that will drive high demand for the product, and they must oversee the enactment of these strategies as well. A keen eye for detail and quality is an essential skill for product marketing director; they need to be able to not only craft appropriate messaging and positioning for a product, but also ensure the product will stand out from similar products in the marketplace. When the product is finally ready to launch the product marketing director must help ensure the launch is successful. They also need to be knowledgeable about the market in which their products exist, including potential and current competitors.


Product Marketing Director Tasks

  • Drive the product marketing programs and develop a marketing plan, budget, and overall campaign.
  • Collect market data and prepare competition analysis.
  • Develop customer-based solutions using the company's products and services.

- Get good with a spreadsheet. If you can organize your ideas in a way that directly impact cost or revenue your opinion will have much more credibility. - Learn to write well. If you can communicate clearly and succinctly people will look to you for vision. If people trust you to write, then you can become the voice of the organization. There is power in that. - Develop your empathy. Knowing what it feels like to be your audience makes you an effective marketer. Learn to put yourself to the side, and then feel how others will interpret your message based on their perspective. - Get real-world experience before you leave university. I only hire people with experience, so if you want to start earning a decent paycheck once you graduate do whatever you can to get relevant experience in the real-world as early as possible (internships, co-op programs, joint research with industry, etc.)
