Some teamwork with marketing teams and other departments may be necessary. Research on market trends, strategies, and competitors’ products should be ongoing in order to market products as efficiently as possible. In this way, the engineer may prove to clients that the products offered by competitors will fall short of the clients’ needs. Some positions may also involve pitching custom solutions to other businesses.
Public speaking skills are beneficial, as presentations must be made in order to sell products or services. The product marketing engineer may also have to create design models, reports, brochures, and other marketing materials. He/she will follow leads in some positions, while others may require these engineers to find prospective clients in other ways. Generally, a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing is required, though some positions require a Master’s degree. Prior experience in the field is often necessary, as well. Strong communication skills are important, as communication with teammates and customers via in-person meetings, telephone, and electronic communication is very regular.
